DENTON -- Terra Ellison recorded her first career double-double, but it wasn't enough as Charlotte overcame a slow start to defeat the North Texas women's basketball team 78-63 on Friday night in the first conference game for both teams.

The Mean Green encountered a hot 49ers team, which had won their last five games, but Charlotte had a sluggish start with North Texas taking a 10-point lead after the first quarter. The North Texas guards fell into foul trouble, however and the visitors began to cut into the lead in the second quarter. The 49ers would go on to extend their lead into double-digits in the second half of the game.

"I think we weren't knocking enough shots down," said North Texas head coach Jalie Mitchell. "We got to make shots and attack the zone properly. The zone bothered us, and we will continue to work on that."

Ellison was an active force on both ends of the court. She went 7-for-14 from the field for 14 points and pulled down a game-high and career-high 15 rebounds.

"I love the rebounds," said Mitchell. "To outrebound them by 10 is great for us. I don't like the turnover number."

Ellison led the Mean Green with eight points in the first quarter as North Texas jumped out to a 24-14 advantage behind 62 percent shooting. The Mean Green also outrebounded Charlotte 14-4 and later finished the game with a 41-31 advantage on the boards.

Charlotte began hitting shots in the second quarter, going 11 for 17 from the field, and moved into a zone, which North Texas struggled to penetrate. Terriell Bradley and Kelsey Criner were both held scoreless in the second quarter and were limited with three and two fouls, respectively.

Charlotte diminished the Mean Green lead with an 18-7 run in the second quarter, giving the 49ers a 32-31 lead. Grace Goodhart put North Texas back in the lead briefly with a 3-pointer, but Charlotte scored the last two baskets of the second quarter to put the visitors ahead 38-36 at the break.

The 49ers extended their lead to nine points in the third quarter, capitalizing on points off turnovers. Charlotte opened the fourth quarter with an 8-2 run to go ahead by 15 points, 66-51, and the Mean Green was not able to cut into that lead the rest of the way.

North Texas was hurt by a season-high 24 turnovers in the game.
