North Texas Improves Its Record To 7-2
Dec. 9, 2017
DENTON - The North Texas women's basketball team rebounded from Tuesday's loss on the road against Indiana to defeat the La Salle Explorers at the Super Pit, 70-44.
Freshman Lauren Holmes led the way for North Texas with a game-high 17 points, an effort which also included a season-high 5 steals in a strong defensive performance for the team overall.
Brittany Smith had a UNT career-high 11 points in the victory.
"I'm really proud of the team," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "We talked a lot about setting the tone the past few games and we were able to do that tonight. From the tempo that was set offensively and taking care of the ball to our team defense and ability to out-rebound a team that was much bigger than us, I thought we showed what kind of team we want to be."
The Mean Green jumped out to an early lead in the contest, which included a 16-0 run early in the first quarter. North Texas was able to force 13 turnovers in the first half alone, one of those turnovers being a steal forced by Holmes which led to a layup at the buzzer heading into halftime.
North Texas came out of halftime picking up where they left off by forcing a pair of quick turnovers and a pair of baskets from Holmes and Micayla Buckner, who had 10 points in 24 minutes.
La Salle couldn't seem to find a way around the persistent Mean Green defense, which forced 27 turnovers, the second-most they've forced this season.
"Our defense really energizes our whole game," Holmes said. "It allowed us to set a tone that was able to help us offensively."
"Defensively I think we stepped it up," Mitchell said. "Our defense was right in line with our game plan."
- By improving to 7-2, the Mean Green are off to their best start since the 2011-12 season.
- North Texas only committed 13 personal fouls, a new season-low.
- The Mean Green tied their season-low in turnovers committed with 11.
The Mean Green will travel to Chicago to take on the University of Illinois- Chicago Flames on Monday, Dec. 18, at 7:00 p.m. CT. That game will be televised on ESPN3.
