Turnovers Plague Women's BBall Against Oklahoma
Mean Green Falls to the Sooners, 68-39
DENTON -- North Texas struggled against Oklahoma in an effort to get their first win of the season against a tough Power 5 team, as the team fell by 29 points, 68-39. The Mean Green struggled to hold possession, with 37 turnovers, surpassing last season's high of 29 vs. Abilene Christian.
The stingy defense held its own against Oklahoma, forcing 31 turnovers - a season high - and held the visitors to 68 points, their lowest point total of the season. However, it wasn't enough to overcome the sloppiness on offense.
North Texas got ahead early in the game, leading the Sooners 5-1. However, by the 14:11 mark of the first period, Oklahoma took the lead and the Mean Green was unable to recover. North Texas had a total of 23 turnovers within the first half and trailed Oklahoma 40-16 at half time. It was the worst first half point deficit for North Texas since last season against Middle Tennessee, which was 22.
"You can't have as many live-ball turnovers as we had in the first half against a good offensive team," said head coach Mike Petersen. "I just thought we didn't do a very good job of handling their pressure. Just way too many turnovers out in front, and you can't defend those."
North Texas played well in the second half, but were unable to catch up to Oklahoma's 24 point-lead. This is the first time North Texas has scored fewer than 60 points in six consecutive games since January 28-February 11, 1983.
Before the game, a special religious service was held by the Village Church of Denton, which contributed to a large attendance in the Super Pit, totaling nearly 2,000.
Senior guard BreAnna Dawkins made the first field goal of the game at the 16:54 mark of the first half to spring North Texas to a 3-1 lead. Oklahoma's first field goal of the game was by senior guard Sharane Campbell-Olds at the 15:46 mark of the first half to pull the score within 5-3.

Mean Green Quick Hitters
Oklahoma's low point total of the season was 68 in a loss to USF. Oklahoma's high turnovers was 29 in a loss to Kentucky.
This is the longest North Texas has started the season without a win since 1994, when the Mean Green started out with seven straight losses.
North Texas's upcoming game against UMKC will be their second away game of the season and their first outside of Texas.
