Mean Green Knock Off Arizona On The Road
North Texas Shoots 47 Percent
Nov. 22, 2016
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Redshirt sophomore Terriell Bradley scored 17 points off the bench to lead the Mean Green to a 62-58 road win over Arizona Tuesday afternoon.
North Texas (1-2, 0-0 C-USA) shot a season-high 47 percent from the field and had three players score in double figures as transition offense and quick ball movement propelled them to the four-point victory over the Pac-12's Wildcats (2-1, 0-0 Pac-12).
"Our effort was light years ahead of where we had been this year," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "I'm extremely proud of our team today. We had some bigs in foul trouble but also had a bunch of other players come in and play big minutes for us."
From the opening tip-off, senior Terra Ellison was locked in. She made her first five shot attempts and was all over the court grabbing rebounds. Her effort in the first half allowed North Texas to jump out to a 12-6 lead and hold it.
With freshman post Hannah Hopkins battling the flu and Mitchell still looking for the right combination, the Mean Green employed its fourth different starting lineup in as many games. Making her first start of the season was guard Grace Goodhart. The Loyola University Chicago transfer, who received an NCAA waiver to play just four days before the first game, scored Tuesday's first basket with a corner 3-pointer. Goodhart played a total of 18 minutes. Her free throw with 10 seconds left in the game sealed the victory.
"We did a great job dealing with adversity," Mitchell said. "We handled our business."
Despite the early lead, the Wildcats crawled back into the game with 3-pointers and free throws and tied the game at 27 at the half.
Arizona even took a three-point lead to start the second half, but a 10-point quarter by point guard Kelsey Criner ignited the offense. Criner made two 3-pointers in the quarter and finished the game with a season high 13 points.
Late down the stretch, holding off the Wildcats was Bradley. The Kansas transfer missed practice the day before due to an injury but played through it on Tuesday. She made two key 3-pointers and in the fourth quarter had multiple and one fouls and successful trips to the free throw line.
North Texas returns to Denton for its first home game of the season as they host Iona on Saturday.
Mean Green Quick Hitters
The win was North Texas' first in program history over the Wildcats.
The win came on the 40th anniversary of the program's first game on Nov. 22, 1976.
Even though shooting 47 percent is a high percentage, North Texas finished the 2015-16 season shooting at least 46 percent in three of its final five games.
With two more 3-pointers, Candice Adams now has 107 for her career.
