Tac's 21 Points Guides Women's Hoops To Exhibition Win
North Texas Downs TWU In First On-Court Action of the Year, 69-59
DENTON - Senior Acheil Tac scored 21 points to lead the North Texas women's basketball team to a 69-59 win against crosstown rival Texas Woman's on Saturday afternoon.
The contest - jokingly dubbed by head coach Jalie Mitchell as the battle to crown Denton's best team - was primarily controlled by North Texas throughout the day. In fact, TWU led only three times early in the first quarter, with the largest Pioneer lead being two points.
"We met a lot of our team goals today and that gave us a good chance to win," Mitchell said. "It feels good to get the win and see the team celebrating. We'll celebrate the good and fix the bad."
The good of which Mitchell spoke came primarily at the offensive end of the floor, where four North Texas players scored in double figures. In addition to Tac's 21 points, the Mean Green got an efficient effort out of junior Terra Ellison as she had 15 points on 7-11 shooting. Senior Teadra Jones and junior Candice Adams also got involved, scoring 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Nine of Adams' points came from long range, where she led both teams in three-pointers made. Ellison and Jones each pitched in a shot each from behind the three-point line. TWU did not hit a three-pointer in the game.
North Texas maintained its early lead, but TWU kept the score close in the first three quarters of play and was down by only six heading into the final frame. It was in the fourth period that the home team managed to find some separation, and it was fueled by a fast-paced attack that put up 25 fourth-quarter points.
"I think it's beautiful when a team can push the ball and score as many points as possible," Mitchell added. "That's part of our identity. We definitely want to push it and showcase some of the talent that we have in the open floor."
Mitchell & Co. will have plenty of opportunities to do just that as the official basketball season begins next week.
Next up for North Texas
The Mean Green has its season-opener next week as the Dons of San Francisco visit the Super Pit for a game at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13.
Newcomers Tosin Mabodu and Kelsey Criner both started for North Texas on Saturday. Mabodu ended the night with two points and three rebounds, while Criner had two points, eight assists and three rebounds.
The Mean Green held TWU to an 0-11 mark from behind the three-point line in the exhibition win. North Texas gave up at least one three in every game last season.
Foul trouble was an issue for the Mean Green. North Texas combined for 26 fouls in the game, and two of the team's nine eligible players fouled out.
