Mean Green Win Third Straight Behind Bradley's 26 Points
North Texas Makes Plays Late
Feb. 15, 2018
DENTON - The North Texas women's basketball team was able to hold off a rally late in the second half by the Southern Miss Lady Eagles to win 71-62 at the Super Pit Thursday night.
Terriell Bradley led the way for the Mean Green on offense by extending her streak of scoring in double figures to 12 straight games after her 26-point performance versus Southern Miss. It's her 15th game this season with 20 or more points. Thursday was also the sixth straight game Bradley has been the leading scorer for either team.
"We moved the ball extremely well and knocked down open shots in the first half," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "We allowed them to take the momentum and jump back in the game, but we handled the adversity well and didn't allow them to make plays at the end."
Southern Miss (13-11, 5-6 C-USA) opened the game with a layup, but that would be the only time they would lead in the contest. North Texas (14-10, 5-7 C-USA) went on a 7-0 run, which swung the momentum in favor of the Mean Green. The North Texas defense, which entered the game as the seventh best scoring defense, held the Lady Eagles to just eight first quarter points and held them to a scoreless drought that lasted over six minutes.
The offense came alive for the Mean Green midway through the second quarter. After a 7-0 run by the Lady Eagles, Bradley was able to answer with three straight 3-pointers. Bradley would go on to score 15 of her 26 points in the quarter. After another basket from Bradley and a 3-pointer from Brittany Smith, North Texas went into the locker room with a 35-22 lead.
North Texas picked up where they left off to start the second half with Micayla Buckner and Trena Mims combining to score 10 points early. Smith was also able to get in on the action with a 3-pointer that helped North Texas extend their lead to as many as 22 points midway in the third quarter.
The comfortable lead the Mean Green held soon began to shrink towards the end of the third quarter and carried over into the fourth as North Texas struggled to find offense against the Lady Eagles' press defense and post intensity.
With just over a minute remaining, Southern Miss went on a run that cut the North Texas lead down to only 4 points.
North Texas, though, made plays at the end.
Micayla Buckner had a put-back layup as the shot clock buzzer hit zero and then the Mean Green were able to grab a key defensive rebound on the next possesion that turned into a mid-range jumper by Bradley.
Leading North Texas on the boards was 5-foot-5 freshman point guard Trena Mims.
Four of Mims' six rebounds were offensive and she made a huge layup in traffic to give UNT a two-possession lead in the game's final seconds.
"I'm extremely proud of how we handled the late run by Southern Miss," Mims said. "We were able to stretch out the lead and keep it away from them."
