DENTON -- Senior Candice Adams scored a season-high 16 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the North Texas women's basketball team to a 75-62 win against Southern Miss on Thursday night at the Super Pit.

"I'm proud of Candice's minutes tonight," said North Texas head coach Jalie Mitchell. "She is a gutsy kid. She is always mentally prepared. I'm always surprised when teams give her open looks. She knocked them down tonight."

Adams led three players in double-figures and tied a season high with 40 minutes. Terra Ellison and Terriell Bradley each contributed 15 points.

The Mean Green won behind a good night of shooting, recording season highs in field-goal percentage (.560) and 3-pointers made with 10.

"We shot the ball extremely well tonight," said Mitchell. "I hope it's contagious for us and continues."

After a slow start in the first quarter, the Mean Green regrouped in the second quarter and gained a small three-point lead. North Texas increased that lead to nine points in the third quarter and then sealed the win with four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter that extended the Mean Green's advantage to double-digits.

The 3-point shooting was key for the Mean Green. Behind 3-pointers by Bradley, Tyara Warren and Adams in the second quarter, the Mean Green used a 13-6 run to regain a lead, 30-27, that they would not relinquish.

North Texas held onto that lead in the third quarter and with a Micayla Buckner basket, took a nine-point lead, 52-43.

"We did what we needed to do to win," said Mitchell. "Our bench stepped up for us. Micayla (Buckner) and Madi (Townley) were huge for us."

Buckner scored seven points off the bench, the most points for the redshirt sophomore since recording 10 back in November.

The Lady Eagles cut the lead to six points, 55-49, at the start of the fourth quarter, but North Texas responded with an 11-4 run to seal the win. Adams hit her third 3-pointer to push the lead to 11 points, 60-49, followed by two Kelsey Criner 3-pointers that gave North Texas a 66-53 lead with 4:35 left in the game.

Adams had the final say with the last basket of the game, a 3-pointer.
