DENTON -- North Texas women's basketball dropped a close 51-49 contest against the Rice Owls on Saturday afternoon at the Super Pit.

The Mean Green dominated in the defensive end for most of the third period but a 14-2 run late in the third sparked the comeback for Rice.

"They hit four straight threes and it gave them momentum and that extra fight," said head coach Jalie Mitchell. "We never got that momentum back."

The Mean Green made a push in the final minute and capitalized when Nicole lademarco committed a technical foul on freshman forward Madi Townley. The two got tangled under the rim after the Owls converted on a layup. The technical foul sent North Texas redshirt sophomore guard Terriell Bradley to the line, where she hit both free throws to cut the Rice lead to 50-48, and it gave the possession to the Mean Green.

On that possession, with less than 25 seconds left, Townley found herself at the line after being fouled by Lexie Ducat with eight seconds left, this time with the opportunity to tie the game. However, the second attempt fell short and the Owls escaped with the win.

North Texas (5-11, 2-3 CUSA) held Rice (10-6, 1-4 CUSA) to just five points in the second period and prevented them from scoring until the 3:43 mark of the third period before Rice went on a 14-2 run. Igniting the run was Maya Hawkins who hit two 3-pointers in a row for the Owls. She finished as the game's leading scorer with 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting.

Bradley led the Mean Green as she notched 15 points and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Senior guard Candice Adams scored 11 points on 4-of-8 from the field. The Mean Green recorded 16 offensive rebounds but only scored five second-chance points, something Mitchell thought held her team back.

"I thought there were baskets we left on the table," she said. "We needed to put the ball in the hole to extend our lead in the first half and we didn't do that."

North Texas returns to action on Thursday Jan. 19 at 7:00 p.m. against Southern Miss at the Super Pit. The game will be aired live on BeIn Sports.

  • Senior Candice Adams now has 760 career points and moved past 2012 graduate Tamara Torru for 20th most in program history. Adams is one point behind 1982 graduate Diane Williams for 19th.
  • North Texas held Rice to no free throw attempts until late into the third quarter.
  • Freshman Hannah Hopkins had a season-high 3 blocks, which all came in the second quarter.
