Mean Green Hang On In Overtime, Win Second Straight
North Texas' Terra Ellison Hits Two Late Free Throws For The Win
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- North Texas women's basketball defeated UAB Friday night 59-58 for its second win in a row.
The Mean Green (5-9, 2-1 C-USA) led by 15 headed into the fourth quarter, but a 12-0 fourth quarter start by the Blazers (7-6, 0-2 C-USA) off four consecutive North Texas turnovers cut down on the lead. UAB tied the game in the final seconds. A would be game winning jump shot at the buzzer by North Texas' Terriell Bradley rimmed in and out.
In the five-minute overtime, the Mean Green outscored the Blazers 5-4. In the final minute of overtime, senior Terra Ellison made three free throws -- two with 16 seconds left to give them a one point lead-- and had a steal that led to free throws.
"In overtime we were a lot more resilient," Mean Green head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "We just grinded it out to be honest. I told them in the huddle `This is our fault. We put ourselves in this situation by not handling the fourth quarter as well. We have to battle back.' "
North Texas opened Friday's contest with a 7-0 lead and took a 31-23 lead into halftime.
Redshirt sophomore Terriell Bradley was in foul trouble for most of the game, which gave way for freshman Adrianna Henderson to play a season-high 20 minutes. The point guard finished the game with six points and a season-high four rebounds.
The Mean Green forced 16 UAB turnovers. The Blazers averaged just 14 a game before Thursday. But most importantly, they limited UAB to just three 3-pointers and the Blazers' leading scorer, Deanna Kuzmanic, scored 0 points. It's only the second time in Kuzmanic's career she's been held scoreless
Ellison was the only North Texas player to score in double figures as she finished with 11 points while playing a career-high 43 minutes. Ellison has now set a new career-high in minutes in consecutive games.
Including Ellison, nine North Texas players scored at least three points. Junior Tosin Mabodu led the team in rebounds with seven.
The Mean Green remain on the road as they travel to Middle Tennessee Saturday. The game's tip-off is schedule for 6:00 p.m. KNTU 88.1 FM will air the game live with Mean Green Radio Network's John Liddle on the call.
