WBB: February 8 Game Highlights - North Texas vs. Old Dominion
Wesley Brooks is entering his fourth season as an assistant coach at North Texas. Since the beginning of his second year, Brooks has been an integral part in the recruiting efforts and post play of the Mean Green. He had a heavy hand in the addition of a junior college player of the year in Janis Peterson as well as the first national top-100 recruit in North Texas history in Candice Adams. He also oversaw the first two years of Alexis Hyder's development in the power forward position. She was named to the Sun Belt All-Conference team in her freshman year and led the Mean Green in scoring during her sophomore campaign. Acheil Tac also flourished in the center position under the guidance of coach Brooks. Her points per game increased almost seven points between her freshman and sophomore year as she rose from bench player to starter. During his second year, Brooks helped with the development of Loryn Goodwin, who was named the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year. In his first year, Brooks was part of one of the nation's biggest turnarounds. The Mean Green won 15 games that season, 10 more than the previous year, and it was the most wins in a single season since 2005-06. Prior to North Texas, he spent three seasons as an assistant at Texas Southern, under coach Yolanda Wells-Broughton, where he helped revitalize a Tiger program that had won no more than six conference games the previous three seasons and had not finished higher than sixth in the league since 2000-01. In 2009-10, the Tigers posted their first .500 plus conference season since 2000-01 and had their highest seed in the conference tournament since that season, and advanced to their first SWAC Tournament semifinal since 1992-93. Prior to Texas Southern, Brooks was an assistant at Robert Morris during 2007-08, where he helped the Colonials to a 23-10 record, a Northeastern Conference Championship, and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Brooks was a graduate assistant and Director of Basketball Operations at West Virginia under head coach Mike Carey. In his time at West Virginia those teams advanced to the 2005 WNIT Final, the 2006 Big East Final, and made an appearance in the 2007 NCAA Tournament.
