WACO, Tex. (10/30/01) - The North Texas men’s golf team finished 10th among 18 teams at the 2001 Henry Griffitts Baylor Invitational after posting a three-round score of 864.
The Mean Green were tied for eighth place after the first two rounds, but dropped two spots in the final standings on Tuesday despite tying its best single-round score of 897 on the final 18 holes. North Texas shot a 290 for the opening round and 287 for the second round.
Baylor won the championship with a score of 823, while Lamar shot an 835 to claim second place and New Mexico finished with an 836 to capture third. North Texas finished ahead of three teams in the Cardinal Classic last week that posted better scores than the Mean Green at the Baylor Tournament, including second-place Lamar.
Two players finished among the top-25 individual leaders to lead the Mean Green. Zach Atkinson and Brad Besler both shot a 215 to tie for 22nd place. Besler posted the team’s single-round low score on the second 18 holes with a 67.
North Texas will wrap up the fall portion of its 2001-02 schedule at the Sixth Annual 49er Collegiate Classic. The tournament is hosted by Long Beach State and is slated to be played Nov. 8-9.
