SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Jason Roets and Josh Jones powered the No. 42 North Texas men's golf team at the opening round of the Lone Star Invitational. Roets shot a 3-under par 69 while Jones was 1-under par and North Texas is alone in sixth place after firing a 2-under par 286 after the opening round.
Roets was nearly flawless on the day with four birdies, 13 pars, and only one bogey on the day. The freshman is tied for seventh place after the first 18 holes. Jones is tied for 17th place after shooting a 71 with three birdies on the day.
Carlos Ortiz was even-par for the day with a 72. He is tied for 23rd place and bounced back from an early round double bogey to post four birdies on the day.
It was a roller coaster of a day for Rodolfo Cazaubon. He was 3-under par on the front nine with three birdies and six pars, but 5-over on the back nine with three bogeys and a double bogey to shoot a 2-over par 74.
Ty Spinella had a similar round but it was the front nine that posed trouble for Spinella. After an opening with a birdie, he had two triple bogey's and was 7-over on the front nine. He bounced back to shoot 2-under on the back nine but is at 5-over par 77 after 18 holes.
North Texas trails the clubhouse leader No. 16 New Mexico by 12 strokes after the opening day. The second round continues tomorrow and live stats can be found at www.golfstat.com
