Howard Closes Strong At Kansas Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. (9/18/07) North Texas men’s golfer Cole Howard surged through the field in the final round of the Kansas Men’s Invitational with the best score of the day but came up just short to finish in second place.

Howard posted a 2-under par 70 and closed two shots behind Jordan Irwin of Houston for the individual championship with a 1-over par 217. Irwin was the only player in the field under par at 1-under 215.

The Mean Green as a team had its best round of the tournament with a final round of 300 to move up into a tie for 11th place.

“Cole played outstanding golf for us in this tournament but we need everyone to step up and compete like he did,” North Texas head coach Jim Bob Jackson said.

Sophomore Dustin Thompson had a difficult final round as he shot an 80 to post a three round score of 229. Austin Welch rebounded to fire a third round of 3-over par 75 while Anthony Broussard had a 4-over par 76. Harris Graham faltered a bit in the third round with a 79.
