LAWRENCE, Kan. (9/18/06) Junior Cole Howard fired a second-round of 1-under par 71 and is in fourth place to lead the North Texas men’s golf team after the first day of play at the Kansas Invitational.
Howard is tied for fourth place with at even-par 144 after two rounds of play. Howard began the day with an opening round of 1-over par 73 and is one of only eight players that is at even-par or better for the tournament.
The Mean Green as a team is alone in eighth place in a deep field of 16 teams with a two-round score of 604.
“Cole had a great day out there and really went out and competed hard for us,” said North Texas head coach Jim Bob Jackson. “We need to pick it up and get the same type of effort from everyone and we can have a strong finish”.
Freshman Dustin Thompson had a solid first round with a 35 on the front nine on his way to a 2-over par 74. He shot an 80 in the second round to close at 154 for the day.
Harris Graham had the second best day for North Texas with a two-round score of 153. Junior’s Austin Welch and Anthony Broussard struggled in the first two rounds. Welch shot a 155 and Broussard a 157.
The final round of the Kansas Invitational begins tomorrow at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
