FLOWER MOUND (9/17/02) -- Paced by the consistency of Zach Atkinson and Freddy Espericueta, the North Texas men's golf team battled to a fourth-place finish in the Mean Green Invitational Tuesday, winding up the two-day tournament 19 strokes behind overall champion Lamar.
Atkinson (72-71-71) and Espericueta (72-71-71) finished with scores of 214 on the par 72 course at Bridlewood Golf Club to land in a four-way tie for sixth place. Lamar's Chris Stroud captured the individual title in a playoff after finishing at 211 along with Arkansas State's Jeremiah Shields and Cardinals teammate Shawn Stefani.
Lamar, which trailed in the team standings by three strokes following Monday's opening-day round, came back with a third round of 284 to finish with a 847 score, five strokes in front of first-day leader Arkansas-Little Rock (853). Arkansas State placed third at 861 ahead of the Mean Green at 866.
Also finishing the top 20 individuals for North Texas were Thomas Kulcak (71-70-75--216), who tied for 13th and Casey Carnes (69-74-74--217) in a tie for 19th.
