NT Tied For Fourth After First Round

FLOWER MOUND (9/16/02) -- First-day leader Arkansas-Little Rock and Lamar find themselves in a two-team battle as the frontrunners of the Mean Green Invitational men's golf tournament following Monday's first two rounds at the Bridlewood Golf Club.

The host Mean Green were in a tie for fourth place in the 14-team field after shooing a one-under 575 team score. UALR blistered the par 72 course with a team score of 16 under 560, followed closely by Lamar's 13-under 563. Eight strokes back in third place was Wichita State (571), followed by the Mean Green and Arkansas State, both with 575 scores.

North Texas was led by Thomas Kulcak's 141 score, firing a 71 on the opening round and coming back with a 70 in the afternoon. North Texas' other top four scorers were also among the field's top 20 finishers, with Zach Atkinson (72-71), Freddy Espericueta (72-71), Brad Besler (71-72) and Casey Carnes (69-74) all standing at 143 after the first day.

The two-day tournament concludes with a final 18-hole round on Tuesday.
