ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The North Texas men's golf team fired its best round of the tournament at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in the third round to move up the standings. Using a final round of 294, which was the sixth lowest round of the day, the Mean Green climbed past Utah and Air Force to finish in 13th place in a very deep field.
"We played a lot better today and we have to get better and play like that from the beginning," said coach Brad Stracke. "This is a first good step for us because of the competition but we can get better from this."
Carlos Ortiz and Ben Hargis both posted 1-over par scores of 73 in the final round while Peter Fallon and Lance Byars were just a shot back at 2-over par. Ortiz and Hargis both had four birdies in their third rounds of play. Hargis led the Mean Green with a three-round score of 222 to finish in 41st.
Byars was one shot behind with a 223 and Ortiz a shot behind him with a 224. Fallon rebounded from a difficult opening round with back-to-back 2-over par 74's and had a score of 230. Freshman Curtis Donahoe ended his day with a final round of 78, the best round of the tournament for him.
North Texas is back in action on September 21-22 at the Waterchase Invitational in Arlington, Tex.
