LANTANA, Tex. (9/12/06) Following a day of rain and lighting, clear skies met the players at the final round of the Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic. The North Texas men’s golf team finished up its second round in the morning with a 3-over par 291 and shot a final round of 9-over par 297 to finish in eighth place.
“I was pleased with our play out there at times during the tournament, but to win you can’t make a lot of mistakes and we made too many of them,” said North Texas head coach Jim Bob Jackson. “We have a lot of room for improvement and just need to continue to work hard and compete at the highest level each round”.
Junior Anthony Broussard posted an even-par round of 72 in the third round and was tied for 12th place with a score of 218. Sophomore Harris Graham finished his second round in the morning and posted a 2-under par 70.
He closed with a final round of 74 and was one-shot behind Broussard at 219 in 15th place. Junior Cole Howard fired a third-round score of 74 and posted a 222. Junior Austin Welch had a 1-under par 71 in the second round and a third round score of 77 to shoot a 224.
Freshman Dustin Thompson had a final round of 78 in his first collegiate tournament and fired a three-round score of 227. Individually for the Mean Green Raul Lemus shot a 230 and Wayne Bailey a 231.
Oral Roberts came from seven shots down to overtake second round leader Washington State and win the tournament by six shots.
North Texas returns to action on September 18-19 at the Kansas Invitational.
