North Texas Ties For Fourth at Wolf Run Intercollegiate
Mean Green Show Well In First Tournament Of 2016-17 Season
ZIONSVILLE, Indiana - The first tournament of the 2016-17 season is in the books, after North Texas tied for fourth place in the team competition at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate at Wolf Run Golf Club in Zionsville, Indiana. In the individual competition, North Texas had two representatives inside the top 10, in sophomore Ian Snyman (-1) who finished fourth, while senior Cory Churchman placed tied for sixth (+1) in the 36-hole event. Rains on Saturday forced tournament organizers to shorten the tournament from the originally scheduled 54-hole competition.
"The team had a good start on one of the most difficult courses we play all year," head coach Brad Stracke said on Sunday. "This team's attitude and demeanor was excellent this week and we are looking forward to a great year."
Snyman had a fantastic Sunday, shooting a one-under 70, after another strong showing Saturday in less than optimal conditions, when he shot an even-par 71. Snyman birdied four times Sunday and eagled the par-five 17. Churchman was tied for second after day one saw him shoot a 69, and he finished up Sunday with a 74 to finish at +1.
Illinois took home the team title at -7 after a very solid Sunday saw them shoot -11 as a group. The Fighting Illini won by 13 strokes, as fellow Big Ten foe, Purdue was second at +6, followed by Kentucky (+7) and the Mean Green, as well as Central Florida, who rounded out the top five, tying for fourth at +17.
The Mean Green will be back in action at the David Toms Intercollegiate in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on October 8-9.
