LANTANA, Tex. (9/11/07) It was a day of close calls that went against the North Texas men’s golf team in the final round of the Cobb/Ferrill Mean Green Classic. Western Kentucky rallied to edge the Mean Green by one stroke to win the team championship and senior Cole Howard lost in a three-way playoff for the individual championship.
Howard scorched the course for a 3-under par 69 to finish in a three-way tie for first at 5-under par with Louisiana-Lafayette’s Devin Carrey and Western Kentucky’s Justin Perry. Carrey eventually outlasted Howard and Perry to win the title on the fourth playoff hole with a birdie.
The Mean Green as a team shot a second and final round of 291 and had a 4-under par 572 for the tournament, but lost by a shot to the Hilltoppers.
Anthony Broussard had a top 10 finish as he closed in seventh place with a final round of 74. Harris Graham and Dustin Thompson had 2-over par 74’s in the final round as well while Austin Welch posted a 77.
The second North Texas team entered was led by freshman Lance Byars who shot an even-par round of 72. Raul Lemus shot a 2-over par 74 and freshman Michel Lee fired a 75. Nathan Sheen and Luis Lemus posted final rounds of 76.
The Mean Green is back in action on September 17-18 at the Kansas Invitational.
