DENTON, Tex. (9/10/07) There is plenty of reason for excitement around the 2007-08 edition of the North Texas men’s golf team as they open the season by hosting the Mean Green Classic at Lantana Country Club. Head Coach Jim Bob Jackson has assembled a roster of experience, youth, and talent that will have the Mean Green competing for conference championship by the year’s end.
Led by the four seniors of Anthony Broussard, Cole Howard, Raul Lemus and Austin Welch, North Texas has its core in place. The emergence of sophomore Dustin Thompson, who earned all-conference honors last year after a third place finish at the SBC Championship, adds more depth and skill to the Mean Green lineup.
On the women’s side the 2007 North Texas Women’s Classic is being held out at Robson Ranch to begin the season for the women. Head coach Amber Chevrie roster this season features nothing but underclassmen except for junior Halli Richards. The rest is made up of four sophomores and three freshmen, which could cause one to be worry about inexperience, but not at North Texas. The four sophomores, Kelsie Gray, Janna Golden, Maggie Noel, and Jordan Rose were thrown into the fire last season and responded with poise that you would find in a veteran.
The influx of three very talented freshman, Chandra Alexander, Kirsten Spittler, and Kyla Whittley, gives the Mean Green a very deep and talented roster heading into the season.
Due to inclement weather the first day will consist of only one round for each tournament, followed by the second and final round tomorrow. Results will be posted on meangreensports.com following each round.
