LANTANA, Tex. (9/10/07) Despite the rainy conditions the North Texas men’s golf team delivered a first round score of 7-under par to take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Cobb/Ferrill Mean Green Classic. North Texas shot a 281 and leads Western Kentucky by one shot thanks in part to the senior trio of Anthony Broussard, Cole Howard, and Austin Welch. The rain limited the first day to just one round of golf.
“I’m pleased with where we are at,” said North Texas head coach Jim Bob Jackson. “We need to continue this tomorrow and keep making shots like we did today”.
Those three combined to shoot 7-under par led by Brossard who posted a 3-under par round of 69 and is along in second place individually. Welch and Howard are just one shot behind, tied for third place, at 2-under par 70. Welch had a scoring front nine shooting a 33 while Howard closed strong with a back nine of 34.
Harris Graham was very steady throughout the day with an even-par round of 72. Sophomore Dustin Thompson struggled with an opening day of 81.
The North Texas “B” team was led by true freshman Luis Lemus who posted an score of 73. His brother Raul shot a 75 while freshman Nathan Sheen, Michel Lee, and Lance Byars shot first round scores of 76.
The final round of the Cobb/Ferrill Mean Green Classic begins tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. from Lantana Country Club.
