DENTON, Texas (9/9/08) After a lengthy rain delay the North Texas men’s golf team shot a final round of 303 to finish in fourth place at the Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic. The final round was delayed for two hours due to the weather, but senior Harris Graham posted a 2-under par 70 to finish in fifth place overall.
Louisiana-Lafayette and Sam Houston State ended the tournament tied at 878 and were declared co-champions. North Texas was eight shots back at 886.
“It was a tough day out there because of the weather but we had our chances. We competed really hard during the three rounds and we can build on this finish as the year goes on,” said coach Jim Bob Jackson.
Graham shot an even-par 216 for the tournament as he improved on his score by two shots each round. He was six shots behind the individual winner Devin Carrey from Louisiana-Lafayette. Graham’s fifth place finish was a career-best for him, topping his previous best finish of 9th place from his freshman season.
Nathan Sheen shot a find round of 78 and finished alone in 20th place. One shot behind was Clarke Kincaid who had a final round of 79 to shoot a 225 for the tournament. Lance Byars was tied for 33rd with a 228. Ben Hargis and Ashley Crawford played as individuals for the Mean Green. Hargis fired a 232 while Crawford struggled in his first Division I tournament with a 259.
North Texas is back in action next week, September 15-16 at the Kansas Invitational
