Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic Set To Begin Monday

DENTON (9/10/04) The 2004 Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic Golf tournament gets underway on Monday, September 13 from Lantana Country Club. This is the third annual Mean Green Classic and the first year that the tournament has been named after legendary North Texas golf coaches Fred Cobb and Herb Ferrell.

Cobb and Ferrell led the North Texas golf program to prominence in the early 1950’s through the mid-1980’s. Cobb led North Texas to four straight NCAA championships.

Following Cobb’s death in 1955, Ferrell took the reigns of the program and led North Texas 13 Missouri Valley Conference Championships, two third-place finishes at the NCAA Championship, and two runner-up finishes at the NCAA Championship.

North Texas is the defending champion of the Mean Green Classic after capturing the tournament last season with a three-round score of 867. The two-day event begins on Monday, September 13 with a shotgun start to the beginning of two rounds of play. The tournament will conclude on Tuesday, September 14 at Lantana Country Club. The event is free and open to the public and begins at 8:30 a.m. each day.
