DENTON, Texas (9/8/08) It’s a fresh start to the season for the North Texas men’s golf team as they host the Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic to begin the year on Monday at Lantana Country Club. North Texas head coach Jim Bob Jackson has a roster full of talent and young faces. The Mean Green has three senior’s on the roster, Harris Graham, Clarke Kincaid, and Nathan Sheen. The rest of the squad is made up of two junior’s, two sophomores and two true freshmen.
“I’m very excited about this team heading into the year. We have a lot of new faces this year and the guys have had a great summer and we can’t wait to get to start the season” said Jackson.
The Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic features 12 teams that will play on the 7,147 yard par 72 course.
One player looking to return to form is junior Dustin Thompson. He fell off the pace a bit last season after earning all-conference honors as a freshman. He saw action in nine tournaments last season and is the Mean Green’s most experience players returning this year.
Graham competed in six tournaments last season and will look to lead a young group in the early going. Sophomore Michael Lee came on strong to end the season as he played in four tournaments including the Sun Belt Conference Championship.
Senior Nathan Sheen and sophomore Luis Lemus also worked their way into the mix last season and will be counted on going into the new year. Newcomers Ashley Crawford and Ben Hargis along with transfer Clarke Kincaid have given the Mean Green an influx of talent that should be evident as the year wears on.
“I really think this team can be special this year. They have a great attitude and the work over the off-season has been great. We are really looking forward to the start of the season” Jackson said.
Play begins at 8 a.m. on Monday with the first two rounds of competition. The final round will be on Tuesday morning.
Results will be posted at the completion of each day.
