SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The North Texas men’s golf team opened a new season and a new era with three true freshman playing in their first rounds of golf at the Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms.
The Mean Green is alone in 10th place after firing an opening round of 304. The three true freshman, Cory Churchman, Julien Marot and Nick Rodriguez each made their Mean Green debut’s but it was Juan Munoz who posted the best score of the day.
Munoz shot a 2-over par 74 and is tied for 28th place. Gonzalo Rubio, one of the returners, was 3-over par with a 75 and is tied for 33rd place. Rodriguez is tied with Rubio with a 3-over par 75 in his first round of college golf.
Churchman and Marot shot scores of 80 and 82 in their opening rounds.
North Texas tees off tomorrow with the second round of play. The third-round will be played on Sunday.
Stat of the day
Juan Munoz opened the season with consecutive birdies on his first two holes of the year.
Houston leads the pack at 9-under par. The Mean Green is in 10th place at +16.
