Atkinson's Run At The U.S. Amateur Comes To An End

OAKMONT, Pa.(8/21/03) -- North Texas senior golfer Zach Atkinson had his sensational week at the U.S. Amateur come to an end as he fell to Bill Haas of Wake Forest, 2 and 1, in the quarterfinals at Oakmont Country Club. The match between Atkinson and Haas was a very tight one throughout as Atkinson was up by one hole after the first nine holes thanks to birdies on the first and ninth holes.

Haas, a first team All-American at Wake Forest last season, battled back and won the 11th and 12th holes to take a one hole lead, his first of the afternoon. Atkinson got to within one hole down after a par on the lengthy par-four, 499 yard 15th hole, but Haas was able to regain his two hole lead on the 16th and ended the match on the 17th hole.

Earlier in the day Atkinson advanced to the Round of 16 with a victory over Steve Slayden, 2 and 1. Atkinson, an All-Sun Belt Conference member this season, advanced two rounds further than last year at the prestigious event.
