Lemus Qualifies For The U.S. Amateur

DENTON (8/18/2005) North Texas men’s golfer Raul Lemus has qualified for the 2005 U.S. Amateur Championship to be played August 22-28 after finishing second at the sectional qualifier at Lantana Country Club.

Lemus, entering his sophomore year with the Mean Green, fired a two-round score of 145 and is the third North Texas men’s golfer to qualify for the U.S. Amateur since 2003.

Lemus will compete with 312 golfers in stroke play starting on Monday, August 22. The first round will be played at Merion Golf Club with the second round to be played at Philadelphia Country Club.

The top 64 scores after the first two rounds will advance to match play to determine the 2005 champion.

Lemus joins former North Texas golfers Zach Atkinson and Brad Gibson who qualified for the U.S. Amateur in 2003. Atkinson advanced out of stroke play and into the match play before eventually being knocked out.
