Gibson, Atkinson Qualify For US Amateur Championship

DENTON (8/5/03) -- North Texas senior golfers Brad Gibson and Zach Atkinson will be competing in the United States Amateur Championship on August 18-24 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa. Gibson and Atkinson both qualified for the field by finishing in the top three of their sectional qualifying events.

"It's great for both of them, and it's a testament to how good of players that they are," said North Texas head coach Jim Bob Jackson. "They are both great players, and they are what we are trying to do here at North Texas."

Atkinson (pictured, right) shot a two-round score of 138 at the Trophy Club golf course and finished second to earn his spot into the Championship. Gibson (pictured, left) fired a two-round score of 145 and finished tied for second at the Gentle Creek Country Club in Prosper, Tex.

"It's a great honor and I'm just thrilled at the chance to make to this level. Just to go to the US Amateur means a lot," said Gibson. "I know I had a good chance to make it, and I was just able to play two good rounds of golf. I'm really excited about playing with the best group of golfers in the country. I'm going to go up there and do my best."

The tournament begins on Monday, August 18, with 312 players competing in stroke play for two rounds until Wednesday, August 20, when the field is pared down to 64 players and the format switches to match play.
