THE WOODLANDS, Tex. - North Texas men’s golfer Zach Atkinson won the Texas State Amateur Championship by three strokes after shooting a two-under par 286 two win the tournament at The Club at Carlton Woods. Despite a final round of 78, Atkinson held off the field and captured the championship after finishing second last year.
Atkinson opened the tournament with a six-under 66 and followed that up with two straight rounds of 71. Atkinson held a four-shot lead heading into the last day but struggled in the final round early on to find his stroke.
He had two bogey’s and a triple bogey on the seventh hole to see his lead shrink to just one shot after the first seven holes. Atkinson regained his stroke on the back nine with eight straight pars to close out the tournament and capture the championship.
Atkinson is the first North Texas golfer to win the Texas State Amateur Championship and will turn pro later this year as he will compete in the Texas State Open.
