TYLER, Tex. (7/13/07) Just because it’s the summer doesn’t mean that some of the North Texas men’s golf team is relaxing. Raul Lemus and Cole Howard both qualified for the 37th Texas State Open and Lemus is taking full advantage of it. The senior to be smoked The Cascades course for an opening round of 3-under par and he is in fifth place after the first round of play.
"I haven't been playing too hot," Lemus said. "But it feels good to be back, especially at this stage."
Lemus, who struggled a bit his junior season, shot a 35 on the front nine and closed with a 32 on the back nine. Lemus has the lowest score after the first round for any of the amateurs.
Howard shot a even-round par score of 70 and has the fifth lowest score for any of the amateurs competing in the event. He is currently tied for 30th place.
The 156-player field will be cut to the low 55 scores and ties after today's second round.
