Men's Golf Questionnaire

We are excited about your interest in the University of North Texas and Mean Green men's golf. A golf magazine once called the University of North Texas the "Notre Dame" of men’s golf -- for a very good reason. With 79 tournament championships, including four NCAA crowns and 28 conference titles to its credit, North Texas has earned international recognition in the sport.

In all, the Mean Green has competed in the NCAA Tournament 30 times as a team and placed in the top 10 on 16 of those occasions. The program’s long list of successes also includes seven Lone Star Conference titles, two Gulf Coast Conference championships, 13 Missouri Valley Conference titles, three Southland Conference championships, one Big West Conference title and two Sun Belt Conference Championships, with the most recent on coming this past season.

Under head coach Brad Stracke, the program is having a rebirth to national prominence. North Texas finished the season ranked No. 27 in the nation this past year, the highest ranking for the program since the national rankings began in the late 90’s.

The Mean Green captured the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Championship, the first conference title since 2003 and another bid to the NCAA Tournament. Last season Stracke led the Mean Green to the first at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, and it marks the first time that North Texas has been in the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons since 1974-75.

Stracke has coached back-to-back individual conference champions in Ty Spinella (2012) and Carlos Ortiz (2011), a feat accomplished for only the second time in school history. In his four seasons, North Texas has had nine players named to the All-Sun Belt team, which is the same number had named to the all-conference team from 2002-2009.  His first two recruits, Ortiz and Rodolfo Cazaubon are only the fifth and sixth players in school history to earn three-straight all-conference honors this season. Stracke is the first coach to lead North Texas to the NCAA Championship in the modern era.

Quick Hits On North Texas
A member of the Sun Belt Conference, North Texas has captured 14 conference championships since 2001. Individually, 58 Mean Green student-athletes were named All-Sun Belt Conference during the 2010-11 school year. This past season, the Mean Green finished in the top three at conference championships in six sports, including three third-place finishes for the Mean Green track & field teams. The volleyball team won a share of the West Division title, while the men's basketball team advanced to the conference championship game for the second straight year.

In 2010-11, both golf teams saw postseason play. The men's and women's golf teams received at-large bids to the NCAA Regional Tournament after posting record-breaking seasons. The men finished in a tie for second at the conference tournament and finished in the top 5 in nine of their 10 regular season tournaments. The women finished fourth in the conference tournament and won four regular-season tournaments.

The men's basketball teams have won at least 20 games for five consecutive years, and the soccer program continued its winning tradition by posting its 16th straight winning season in 2010. The swimming and diving team posted its third straight third-place finish at the conference tournament.

The Men's Golf Coaching Staff
Please note that, per NCAA rules, coaches can only respond via e-mail to juniors (after September 1) and seniors in high school. Coaches must mail responses to freshmen and sophomores, per NCAA rules. You can call any North Texas coach, but they cannot return your phone call unless you are a senior in high school.

The Mean Green golf teams worked out at a new indoor practice facility in 2006. Located on Bonnie Brae Avenue across from the  athletic center, the Mean Green Softball and Golf Facility houses indoor putting and driving areas. This facility allows athletes from the softball and golf programs to hone their skills in the comfort of a climate controlled indoor practice range.  For golf, the facility houses two net enclosed driving ranges and a putting green with full length wall mounted mirrors to help coaches and athletes monitor swinging motion.

The North Texas golf teams practice on some of the finest golf courses in the area, including Oakmont Country Club, Tour 18, Lantana Golf Course, Robson Ranch, Trophy Club, Golf Club at Champions Circle and Bridlewood Country Club.

Academic Athletic Services
In the Fall of 2005, the academic and compliance staff relocated to the Mean Green Village. Located on Bonnie Brae, the new Student-Athlete Development Center is three times the size of the former academic center. The Center serves as the cornerstone of the Mean Green Village and is only a short walk from the surrounding sports facilities.
