DENTON, Texas - Carlos Ortiz of the North Texas men's golf team was named to the Division I PING All-Region team today as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Ortiz, who captured the 2011 Sun Belt Conference title, was named to the Central Region team by the GCAA.
Ortiz turned in a sensational season by winning three tournaments this season. He finished in the top-20 in nine of the 11 tournaments this season, capped off by a 7-under par score to win the Sun Belt Conference title. He was also named to the All-Sun Belt team.
Ortiz won the William H. Tucker Invitational, the Lone Star Invitational and the SBC title this season. He had eight top-15 finishes overall for the season while posting a team-low stroke average of 71.25 in leading the Mean Green to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2003 season.
His individual conference title was the first for a Mean Green golfer since the 2003 season.
