SAN DIEGO, Calf. - After the first 18 holes of the NCAA West Regional the No. 39 North Texas men's golf team in right in the hunt for a berth to the NCAA Championship.
The Mean Green is alone in fourth place after an opening round of 293. North Texas is one stroke ahead of No. 23 San Diego and two strokes ahead of SMU and No. 36 UNLV. The top five teams advance to the NCAA Championship.
USC has the overall lead at 10-under par while No. 2 UCLA and No. 11 Texas are six shots ahead of North Texas at 1-under par.
Rodolfo Cazaubon leads the way for North Texas as he is tied for seventh place after the first round at 2-under par. Cazaubon fired a 70 as he had four birdies on the day and only two bogeys.
Ty Spinella is also in the top-20 in a tie for 16th place after the opening round. Spinella was even-par and carded a 72 after three birdies, three bogeys, and 12 pars on the day. Curtis Donahoe is tied for 34th after a 3-over par 75. Donahoe had three birdies on the day.
Carlos Ortiz had the wildest round of the day for North Texas, ending at 4-over par. Ortiz had three eagles on the day but three double bogeys and four bogeys held him back and he is tied for 44th. Josh Jones had an opening round of 81 on the day and is tied for 70th place.
