MANHATTAN, Kan. (5/16/03)- The North Texas men's golf team battled through difficult conditions in the second round of the NCAA Central Regional to fire a 303 and sit tied with Oklahoma for 14th place heading into tomorrow's final round at the Colbert Hills Country Club.
The Mean Green are 12-over par for the tournament and trail defending national champion Minnesota by four strokes for the 10th spot. The top 10 teams, as well as the top two individuals of the non-advancing schools, will advance to the NCAA Championships May 27 through 30 in Stillwater, Okla.
"The weather was a bit iffy today but the bottom line is we just didn't play well today," said North Texas head coach Jim Bob Jackson. "We didn't take care of business today but tomorrow's another day".
Clear skies and perfect conditions in the first round were replaced by gray skies and rain for most of the second round which contributed to the high scores. Junior Zach Atkinson remains the top individual for the Mean Green as he shot a two-over par 74 to give him a two-round score of even par 144. Atkinson is tied for 23rd place overall.
Senior Brad Besler rebounded from a difficult opening round to card three birdies on his way to a second round 74. Brad Gibson shot a second round four-over par 76 and is tied for 48th at 147 after two rounds.
Illinois remains the overall team leader at six-under par with a two-round score of 570.
"Were only four shots from being in the top 10 and were going to need a great effort from everyone. We know what's its going to take and we just need to go out there and do it" said Jackson.
The Mean Green will tee off tomorrow's final round in the morning attempting to become the first team since 1963 to earn a trip to the NCAA Championship.
