MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. - Sophomore Carlos Ortiz surged into the lead and the North Texas men's golf team is four shots back after the second round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship. Ortiz shot 4-under par 68 and is the clubhouse leader after 36 holes by one stroke.
North Texas as a team shot a two-over par round of 290 and sit 1-over par for the tournament, tied with ULM for second place and four strokes behind the leader Denver entering the final round.
Ortiz continued his stellar play with three birdies, an eagle, and only one bogey in his second round. He closed strong with an eagle on the par-5 17th hole. Ortiz hit his second shot over the water to 10-feet away and then sank the putt for the eagle. Ortiz has only two bogeys through two rounds of play, five birdies, and two eagles. Ortiz is 7-under par for the tournament at 137.
Rodolfo Cazaubon is tied for 11th place after a second round of 1-over par 73. Cazaubon had to battle through two shots that found water, but finished with birdies on two of the last three holes. Cazaubon is even-par at 144.
Ty Spinella is tied for 22nd place after a 2-over par 74. Spinella battled back after three early bogeys in his round with back-to-back birdies on 11 and 12. Spinella caught a bad break on the par-5 17th hole as his second shot buried in the green-side bunker and he was forced to take a drop, eventually ending in a bogey.
Josh Jones fell back with a 6-over par 78 in the second round. Jones had three double bogeys on the round. Curtis Donahoe was 3-over par on the day with a 75 but battled back like Spinella on the back-nine. He had four bogeys on the front nine, but was able to put up three birdies on the back nine to recover.
The final round begins tomorrow morning with split tee times from Hole 1 and Hole 10. Live stats can be found at www.golfstat.com
