Mean Green Tied For The Lead After Round One
MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. - It was a cold and blustery start to the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Championship, but that didn't hold back the No. 27 North Texas men's golf team as they are tied for the lead after the opening round of play. North Texas shot a 10-over par 298 and is tied with No. 47 Middle Tennessee for the team lead while junior Ty Spinella holds the overall individual lead after an opening round of 71.
The Mean Green and Blue Raiders both have a nine-shot lead over the closest competitor, South Alabama after the first round. All five players for North Texas are in the top-25 and four of the five are 11th or better.
The windy conditions kept the scores high, but Spinella was the only player in the field to shoot under par for the day. He was steady the entire round as he opened with nine straight pars. He coupled that with two birdies on the back nine and takes a two-stroke lead into the second round of play.
Rodolfo Cazaubon had an adventurous afternoon. He opened with a double bogey after losing his tee shot, and through five holes was 5-over par. Cazaubon bounced back with birdies on 8, 10, and 11. He ended the round with an eagle on the par-5 17th after sinking a 25-foot putt to finish his round at 3-over par 75. He is tied for seventh place.
Jason Roets and Carlos Ortiz are both one shot back after shooting 76. Ortiz had perhaps the best shot of the day on the 17th hole. After pulling his second shot from the fairway out of bounds, he put his fourth shot one foot from the cup for an easy par. Roets had his only birdie of the day on the 17th hole and is tied with Ortiz for 11th place.
Curtis Donahoe is the only player without a birdie for North Texas after firing a score of 6-over par 78. However Donahoe is tied for 23rd after 18 holes.
North Texas and Middle Tennessee were the only teams to shoot under 300 in the field. North Texas tees off tomorrow morning at 8:45 and live stats can be found at www.golfstat.com
