MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (4/23/08) North Texas closed out play at the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Golf Championship as the women shot a tournament best score but the men slipped in the final round to finish in eighth place. Senior Anthony Broussard was named to the all-conference team for the first time after closing his collegiate career out with some of his best golf.
Broussard is the third golfer in the past three seasons for North Texas to be named to the all-conference team.
The Denver Pioneers swept the team titles as they captured the men and women’s crowns.
The women, paced by sophomore Janna Golden’s 2-over par 74, shot a third round score of 306 to improve to seventh place for the tournament.
Golden had four birdies on the afternoon as she finished the tournament with a score of 232 to lead North Texas. Halli Richards shot a third round score of 78 to shoot a 234 for the tournament. Maggie Noel and Jordan Rose both had three-round scores of 238.
Denver ran away from the field finishing 42 shots ahead of its closest competition.
On the men’s side North Texas posted a final round of 294 and fell to eighth place at six-over par 870 for the tournament. Denver held off a hard charging New Orleans team to win the championship by one stroke.
Broussard had his best round of the tournament with a 1-under par 71. Broussard played consistent golf in the third round with two birdies and 15 pars for the round. He finished at even-par 216 for the tournament, tied for 17th place.
Senior Austin Welch was tied with Broussard with a 216 after a final round of 2-over par. Cole Howard shot a 75 in the final round to post a 3-over par 219. Michael Lee carded a third round score of 74 and Ben Smock shot a 76 in the final round.
