MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The No. 38 North Texas men’s golf team’s quest for a second straight Sun Belt Conference title got off to a bit of a slow start as the Mean Green is in a three-way tie for third place after the opening round. North Texas, the defending conference champion, shot a 7-over par 295 and is knotted up with Georgia State and Middle Tennessee.
No. 49 South Alabama holds a commanding nine-stroke lead over second place UALR. The Jaguars were the only team to shoot under-par on the day as they posted a 4-under 284.
Senior Rodolfo Cazaubon is tied for sixth place after firing an even-par round of 72. He had three birdies along with three bogeys on the day and he is four shots behind the leader Lane Hulse of South Alabama.
Carlos Ortiz and Curtis Donahoe both posted 2-over par scores of 74. Ortiz had four birdies on the day but also two double-bogeys. Donahoe had two birdies on posted seven straight pars to finish off the round. They are both tied for 14th place.
Freshman Gonzalo Rubio is one stroke behind at 3-over par 75. Rubio had three birdies on the day and is tied for 20th place. Marco Scarola shot a 7-over par and two triple bogey’s held his score back on the day. He is tied for 43rd place.
North Texas is 11 shots behind the Jaguars heading into the second round and two strokes behind UALR for second place.
