North Texas Within Striking Distance Heading To The Final Round

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (4/22/08) The North Texas men’s golf team posted an even-par round of 288 for the second straight day but slipped to fifth place at the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Golf Championship. The Mean Green is 12 shots behind the clubhouse leader Denver heading into the final round of a tightly bunched group.


Senior Austin Welch turned in one of his best rounds of the year with a 2-under par 70 to lead North Texas.  Welch is tied for 10th place overall with a 2-under par score of 142, six shots off the pace set by Johnny Caldwell of South Alabama.  Cole Howard shot a second straight round of even par golf with a 72 as he is tied for 16th place overall.


Anthony Broussard is one shot behind after a second round score of 73. Ben Smock shot a 1-over par round of 73 and Michael Lee came in at 3-over par 75 on the day. Denver had the best round of the day with a 280 and holds a five-shot lead over Louisiana-Lafayette heading into the final round.


On the women’s side the Mean Green rebounded in the second round to post one of the best rounds of the day with a 308. North Texas had the fourth best round of the day and improved to eighth place overall with a two-round score of 630.


Sophomore Maggie Noel recorded the best round of the day and tournament for North Texas with a second round of 3-over par 75. Noel climbed to 30th for the tournament and is tied with teammate Janna Golden with a two-round score of 158.  Halli Richards is pacing North Texas with a 156.


Denver continues to lead the women’s championship, increasing its lead to 26 strokes over the field heading into the final round.


The third round begins at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
