MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (4/21/08) It’s post-season time for the North Texas men’s and women’s golf teams as they head to Alabama going after the Sun Belt Conference Championship. The Mean Green men are in search of their 28th conference title in school history while the women are gunning for their first in school history.
The competition will take place at the Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. 12 men’s teams and 11 women’s teams will hit the course hoping to claim the Sun Belt title and earn an automatic bid to the 2008 NCAA Golf Regional. The men’s competition will take place on the Fighting Joe Course while the women will compete of The School Master Course.
On the men’s side senior Anthony Broussard has raised his level of play to the best that the Sun Belt has to offer. Broussard enters the championship having had three straight top 10 finishes and has the team-best stroke average. Louisiana-Lafayette is the defending champion on the men’s side.
The North Texas women have been ravaged by injuries this season but with the arrival of the tournament the Mean Green has their sights set on the school’s first ever conference title. Junior Halli Richards has been the steadiest golfer for North Texas throughout the spring season despite playing through numerous nagging injuries.
Denver is the defending champion on the women’s side.
Last season the North Texas men finished in 5th place while the women ended in 8th place.
