North Texas In Third Heading Into The Final Round At The SBC Championship

NICEVILLE, Fla. (4/20/04)- The North Texas men's golf team sits in third place after firing a second round score of 297 at the Sun Belt Conference Championship from Bluewater Bay and Resort. The Mean Green, going after their first back-to-back conference championship since 1974-75, are nine shots behind New Mexico heading into the final round.

"It was a little bit tougher day today than yesterday," said North Texas head coach Jim Bob Jackson. "We are still in the hunt and things can change on this course. There is still a lot of golf left to be played and if we can go out and be competitive we still have a chance".

Weston Bingham moved into the top five with an even par round of 72 and is tied for fourth place at 145. Senior's Zach Atkinson and Brad Gibson are one-shot behind with two round scores of 146 as they are tied for seventh place. Junior Reid McPherson fired a 75 and has a two-round score of 150.

On the women's side North Texas surged into a tied for fifth place with Florida International after a round of 318 keyed by sophomore Andra Lancaster's one-over par 73. Lancaster also moved into the top 10 individually as she is only three shots behind the leader and is tied for seventh place at 151 after two rounds of play.

Junior Brooke McCutchen had the second best round of the day for North Texas with her season-best score of 78 to move her to 165 for the tournament. Laura Rakel is at 163 after two rounds while Tara Lambright is at 168 after two rounds and Jaclyn Golden sits at 171 after the first two days.

North Texas is at 644 after two rounds of play while Denver and New Mexico State are tied for the team lead at 600. 

The final round of play will begin tomorrow morning from the Bluewater Bay and Resort.
