NICEVILLE, Fla. (4/19/04)- Going after its second straight Sun Belt Conference Championship the North Texas men's golf has a two shot lead after first round of play from the Bluewater Bay and Resort. The Mean Green has three golfers in the top 10 after the first round led by senior Zach Atkinson who fired an opening round two-under par 70 and individually is tied for second place.
"It went pretty well today even though things didn't start off very well," said North Texas head coach Jim Bob Jackson. "We started a little slow but the guys found a way to step up and rebounded and I'm very pleased with the way we finished. It wasn't easy but it's nice to be in the lead after the first day".
Senior Brad Gibson fired an even-par score of 72 and is tied for fifth while Weston Binghman is one shot back with a 73 and is tied for seventh place. Reid McPherson opened with a 36 on the front nine on his way to a first round score of 75.
The Mean Green hold a two-shot lead over South Alabama and New Mexico State.
One the women's side North Texas is in seventh place after the first day after an opening round score of 326. Sophomore Andra Lancaster led the way with an opening round of 78 and is tied for 14th place.
Laura Rakel shot a back nine score of 37 and ended her first round with an 80 and is in 21st place. Freshman Tara Lambright was one shot behind Rakel with an 81. Jaclyn Golden and Brooke McCutchen both fired a first round score of 87.
Denver sits atop the leaderboard after the first round of play on the women's side with a 302.
The second round of play will begin tomorrow morning from the Bluewater Bay and Resort.
