Thompson Earns All-Conference With Career-Low Round

ORLANDO, Fla. (4/18/07) If Dustin Thompson was nervous about playing in his first conference championship, it didn’t show. The freshman fired a career-low round of 4-under par 68 in the final round of the 2007 Sun Belt Conference Golf Championship to lead the North Texas men’s golf team.

“We had our chances out there but just gave away too many shots in the final few holes,” said North Texas coach Jim Bob Jackson. “I feel like that we gave ourselves a chance to win and I’m proud of the effort that we had in the tournament”.

Thompson earned all-conference honors as he finished in third place overall with a three-round score of 3-under par 213. He is the first North Texas freshman golfer to be named to the all-conference team since Ryan Palmer in 1996. Thompson finished just two shots behind the winner Craig Smith from Middle Tennessee.

Despite the efforts of Thompson, the Mean Green was unable to capture the conference title as they shot a final round of 291 to finish in fifth place. North Texas as a team carded a three-round total of 881.

Junior Austin Welch shot his best round of the tournament with a 1-over par 73. Cole Howard posted a 2-over par 74 in the final round. Anthony Broussard and Harris Graham both had their struggles in the third round with 76.
