Mean Green Women Tied For The Lead, Men In the Hunt After the Opening Day of the SBC Championship

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (4/17/06) A trio of North Texas women’s golfers fired an opening round of 2-over par 74 to propel the Mean Green into a tie for first place after the opening round of the 2006 Sun Belt Conference Championship from the PGA Village.


Andra Lancaster, Jaclyn Golden, and Halli Richards shot 74’s as North Texas posted a 303 in the first round and is tied with Florida International for the lead.


The North Texas men are tied for fifth place after an opening round of 293, just seven shots behind clubhouse leader Western Kentucky. The top six teams on the men’s side are separated by only seven shots.


“We knew coming in that this was going to be close and competitive that’s and exactly what it’s been,” said North Texas head coach Jim Bob Jackson. “I’m pleased with the position that we are in. The guys are playing with a lot more confidence and I think that if we can make come out and cut into that lead tomorrow we have a chance”.


For the women Golden had three birdies on the Dye Course to lead North Texas. Golden, Lancaster, and Richards are two shots behind the leader heading into the second round. Brooke Tanner fired an opening round of 81 and Tara Lambright posted an 82.


“I’m very excited about our first round,” said North Texas women’s coach Amber Chevrie. “The girls came out and played aggressive and made a lot of shots. We are right where we want to be”.


Individually for the men, Austin Welch is tied for fifth place after an opening round of 2-under par 70 on the North Course. Welch had only one bogey on the afternoon as he posted three birdies and 14 pars. Andreas Kali was 1-over par at 73 and Anthony Broussard shot a 2-over par 74. Kali posted five birdies on the day and sits in 17th place.


Ben Smock recovered from a tough start to shoot a 76. Smock, who is tied for 25th, played the 1st and 10th hole at 5-over par, but the remaining 16 holes at 1-under par.

Raul Lemus fired an opening round of 79 and is tied for 39th place. Lemus started his round strong with an even-par score through the first 13 holes, but struggled in the final five holes.


The second round of the SBC Championship begins tomorrow at 8 a.m. from the PGA Village North Course and Dye Course.
