ORLANDO, Fla. (4/16/07) Blustery conditions made life difficult for nearly every team except for the North Texas men’s golf team at the 2007 Sun Belt Conference Golf Championship. The Mean Green shot an 8-over par 296 and is alone in second place after the first day of the championship from the Disney Magnolia Course.
New Orleans blistered the course and the field and takes an 11-shot lead into the second round after firing a 3-under par 285 in the first round.
“It was windy today but we took advantage of it and I’m pleased with where we are at,” said North Texas head coach Jim Bob Jackson. “We have some work to do but we are in position and have a chance if we can just keep making shots.
The Magnolia Course toughened up for the opening round only surrendering four rounds of under-par golf on the afternoon. North Texas has four players in the top 15 after the opening round.
Freshman Dustin Thompson is three shots off the lead after an opening round of even-par 72. Thompson is tied for fifth place. Harris Graham is in 11th place following an opening round of 2-over par 74. Cole Howard and Austin Welch both fired opening rounds of 3-over par 75 and sit in a tie for 15th place. Anthony Broussard had a difficult opening round of 78.
The Mean Green tee off with its second round at 9:45 tomorrow morning.
