LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (3/28/06) North Texas sophomore Austin Welch posted a final round of 72 to capture the UALR/First Tee Collegiate by two strokes from the Chenal Country Club. Welch won the championship with a 4-under par score of 212 as he had 10 birdies in three rounds of play.
“Austin really played hard these last two days and I’m really proud of the way that he came out and competed and wanted to win this tournament,” said North Texas head coach Jim Bob Jackson. “I’m encouraged by what I saw from the guys this tournament and feel like this was one of our better tournaments of the year”.
North Texas as a team finished in fourth place, just six shots behind tournament champion Lamar, with a three-round score of 883. The Mean Green fired a final round of 297 in a tightly contested final round that saw the top four teams separated by only six strokes.
Senior Andreas Kali had a top-five finish with a final round of 74. Kali was even-par for the tournament at 216 and finished alone in fifth place.
Sophomore Anthony Broussard shot a 1-over par 73 in the third round and closed out the tournament tied for 15th place with a score of 223.
Sophomore Raul Lemus fired a 78 in the third round and shot a 232, while Harris Graham closed the tournament with a 79 and shot a 243 for the tournament.
North Texas has one final tune-up before the Sun Belt Conference Championship when they return to action on April 10-11 at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic.
