LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (3/26/02) The North Texas men’s golf team shot a three-round 900 at the UALR/Copy Systems Intercollegiate to finish the two-day tournament tied for sixth place.
The Mean Green entered the second day of competition in 12th place after posting a first-round score of 302, but jumped six places in the final standings by shooting a 302 for the second 18 holes and 296 for the final round of action.
The Mean Green ended the tournament tied with fellow Sun Belt Conference school’s Arkansas-Little Rock and New Mexico State. North Texas also bettered Sun Belt foe Middle Tennessee in the final standings as the Blue Raiders finished 14th with a score of 919.
Southeastern Louisiana won the tournament title with a combined score of 862, while Lamar finished second with an 874 and UT-Arlington finished third with an 879.
Freddy Espericueta (Jr.; Edinburg, Tex.) and Michael Pruitt (Sr.; Idalou, Tex.) both finished among the top 25 individual leaders, claiming ties for 21st place and 24th place respectively. Both Espericueta and Pruitt shot a 70 in one of the three rounds of play to post the lowest single round score among all the North Texas golfers. Espericueta has now finished in the top 25 four times this season and Pruitt has finished in the top 25 the last two tournaments in a row.
North Texas will next compete in the ASU Indian Golf Classic, scheduled for April 15-16. The tournament will be the final outing of the season for the Mean Green before the Sun Belt Conference Championship (April 22-24).
