GOODYEAR, Ariz. - For the second straight tournament sophomore Carlos Ortiz has the clubhouse lead after the first round to pace the North Texas men's golf team at the 2011 Desert Shootout. Ortiz is tied for the top spot after a 6-under par 66 in the opening round, the third 66 of the season for Ortiz, as the Mean Green was 8-under par in the first round and is in sixth place.
North Texas is only six strokes off the lead however in a tightly packed leaderboard at the top. Oklahoma has the clubhouse lead at 274 after the opening round.
Rodolfo Cazaubon is only two shots back after a 4-under par 68 in the opening round. Cazaubon was as steady as can be with 14 pars on the day, four birdies, and no bogeys on his card in the opening round. He is tied for eighth place. Curtis Donahoe was even-par for the day with a 72 as he is in 41st place after the first 18 holes.
Ty Spinella and Josh Jones were both over par with scores of 74 and 75, but remain within striking distance with 36 holes left to play.
North Texas trails OU by six strokes, TCU by four, Saint Mary's, BYU, and Iowa State by only three shots after 18 holes.
The second round begins tomorrow morning.
