TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - It was a second round surge for the No. 31 North Texas men's golf team spurred on by Ty Spinella and Josh Jones as the Mean Green fired a 4-under par 280 and moved into fourth place at the Seminole Intercollegiate.
Spinella and Jones combined to shoot 6-under par as the Mean Green had the lowest round of the day in the field of 18 teams. North Texas is one shot behind third place, five off second, and only eight strokes behind the leader, No. 18 Arkansas heading into the final round.
Spinella, who shot an 81 yesterday, cut 14 strokes off that score with a bogey free round that featured 14 pars and four birdies to shoot a 4-under 67. Jones had a round of 2-under par 69 with four birdies on the day. Spinella moved up into a tie for 38th while Jones is tied for 22nd.
Sophomore Carlos Ortiz, who held the first round lead after the first round, shot a 2-over par 73 and is tied for sixth place. Ortiz is 1-under for the tournament and three strokes off the lead.
Rodolfo Cazaubon remained in the top 20 as he is tied for 16th place after an even-par round of 71. Cazaubon had five birdies in his second round, but three bogeys and one double bogey.
Curtis Donahoe shot a second round of 78 and is at 153 after the first two rounds of play. The final round begins tomorrow morning and live stats can be found on www.golfstat.com.
